A new twist in the AI war as China looks to restrict import of Nvidia chips

Chinese authorities appear to be moving to restrict the entry of advanced artificial intelligence chips from Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD), adding a new layer of uncertainty to the already tense technology relationship between Beijing and Washington.

Customs officials have told agents that Nvidia’s H200 chips are not currently permitted to enter China. At the same time, domestic technology groups have been advised by officials not to buy the chips unless there is a compelling reason.

The guidance is informal but firm, and its severity suggests a de facto halt rather than routine regulatory friction.

The motives are opaque. Beijing may be seeking to give domestic chipmakers more breathing space, to retain leverage in talks with the United States, or simply to buy time while it weighs broader restrictions.

The lack of clarity over whether existing orders are affected adds to the confusion.

The timing is awkward. The H200 was only just cleared for export to China by the US administration, albeit with conditions. In Washington, hardliners argue such chips could enhance China’s military and narrow the US lead in AI.

Demand inside China is strong. The H200 is far more powerful than Nvidia’s previously approved H20 chip and significantly outperforms domestic alternatives such as Huawei’s Ascend processors for training large AI models.

Chinese groups have reportedly placed orders far in excess of Nvidia’s available supply, underlining how high the stakes have become.
