The biotechnology sector’s strong fundamentals and robust innovation could continue to drive outperformance this year, according to Baird analysts.
The firm noted that while macroeconomic risks such as rising interest rates remain, the biotechnology sector’s underlying drivers are supportive.
“We think biotech outperformance should continue in 2026. While we acknowledge the macro risk of interest rates, as biotech analysts, we think the sector fundamentals are strong and should support the continued outperformance that we saw in 2H 2025,” the analysts wrote.
The firm highlighted the sector’s rebound in the second half of 2025, pointing to the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF, which gained 75% from its April 8, 2025, lows, compared with a 37% gain for the S&P 500 over the same period.
“We could say that that outperformance was long overdue after the relatively lagging sector performance in 2021–2024, and arguably the catch-up trade has just begun,” the analysts wrote.
Baird cited several factors supporting the positive outlook, including robust drug development, favorable clinical data, early-stage M&A activity, and ongoing rotation of capital back into higher-beta biotech stocks.
The report also acknowledged potential risks, including interest rate pressures, regulatory and drug pricing headlines, competition for capital from artificial intelligence, and company-specific clinical setbacks.
Despite these risks, the report noted that sector fundamentals remain strong. “Namely, we should see continued M&A activity reward investors as large pharma still has massive revenue holes to fill from its pending LOE cliffs,” the analysts wrote.
Positive data across multiple therapeutic areas and improvements in FDA filings were also highlighted as key supporting factors.
Baird identified a list of top biotechnology stocks for 2026, including Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB, XETRA:IDP), Xenon Pharmaceuticals, Biohaven, Immutep, Taysha Gene Therapies, Voyager Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VYGR), Ocular Therapeutix, Syros Pharmaceuticals, and Celyad Oncology.
