Uber, Lucid unveil premium robotaxis, begin testing in San Francisco Bay area

Lucid Group Inc (NASDAQ:LCID), Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER, XETRA:UT8) and Nuro have unveiled a new premium electric robotaxi at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, and announced the start of autonomous on-road testing in the San Francisco Bay area.

The vehicle, based on Lucid’s all-electric Gravity SUV, is designed to carry up to six passengers and features an Uber-designed in-cabin experience with interactive screens, climate and seat controls, music, and options to contact support or request stops. The robotaxi also provides real-time visualization of its surroundings and planned maneuvers.

The vehicle is equipped with a 360-degree sensor suite, including high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar, and radar, much of it integrated into a roof-mounted “halo” module with LED lights to help riders identify the car and display status. Autonomous computing is powered by NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX Thor platform.

“The debut of our production intent robotaxi with Lucid and Uber is a significant milestone on our path to delivering autonomy at scale,” Nuro co-CEO Dave Ferguson said in a statement.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility & Delivery, added that the partnership “combines leading expertise in electric vehicles, autonomy, and ridehailing” to create a new option for autonomous rides.

Autonomous on-road testing began in December, using engineering prototypes supervised by safety operators. The program is intended to validate performance across a range of scenarios, alongside closed-course testing and simulations.

Pending regulatory approvals and final validation, the robotaxi is expected to enter commercial service on Uber’s platform later in 2026, with production at Lucid’s Arizona factory.

Shares of Uber traded up 5% at $85 following the announcement, while Lucid shares were little changed at about $12.
