Janus Electric COO Lex Forsyth talked with Proactive about a major regulatory milestone for the company’s battery electric truck conversion kits in the United States.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has formally approved the Janus electric drivetrain as a clean energy powertrain solution for diesel truck conversions. This move qualifies fleet operators for a rebate of up to USD 90,000 per converted vehicle, significantly lowering the cost barrier to entry.
“This is just another key step into unlocking the US market,” said Forsyth. He explained that around 70% of trucks servicing the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are still diesel-powered, despite 2024 regulations banning new diesel truck registrations in those zones.
Janus has already partnered with a local EV dealer in California and has begun early commercial discussions with fleets ranging from 600 to 800 trucks. Forsyth said the first two export kits left Australia on 27 December 2025, with conversions expected to begin mid-March and full trials by mid-May to early June.
The company also plans a launch event at the Port of Long Beach, marking the first battery swapping trucks to operate in North America.
