Seeing Machines Ltd (AIM:SEE, OTC:SEEMF), the London-listed tech company behind some of the world’s most advanced in-car monitoring systems, is set to reveal its latest driver and passenger sensing technology at CES in Las Vegas this week.
The system, called 3D Cabin Perception Mapping, uses high-fidelity sensors to track not just the driver but everyone inside the vehicle (where they are, what they’re doing and how they’re behaving) in real time.
The idea is to help cars respond more intelligently to what’s happening inside, whether that’s a drowsy driver, a child in the back seat or a passenger reaching across the console.
“By providing a precise, continuous understanding of occupant presence, position and behaviour, the technology enables automakers to unlock new levels of safety performance,” the company said on Monday.
The latest system builds on Seeing Machines’ existing driver and occupant monitoring platform, which is already in production with a number of carmakers.
It will be shown off at CES Las Vegas both in a live, in-vehicle demo and through a rear-view mirror-based solution that offers a wide-angle view of the car’s interior.
Seeing Machines also plans to demonstrate how its cabin monitoring tech can work in tandem with a vehicle’s exterior sensors, such as cameras and radar, to create a fuller picture of what’s happening both inside and out.
That approach could prove key to improving semi-autonomous driving features, which rely on the car’s ability to make sense of constantly shifting conditions.
The company’s rear-view mirror integration, already being used in what it called its “largest automotive program won to date”, was recognised as a technical milestone by the industry at an event in Barcelona last year.
Seeing Machines’ Future Mobility Group will be in Las Vegas for meetings with partners and customers, with a focus on developing next-generation systems to support more advanced forms of automated driving.
The technology will also appear at stands run by partners including Valeo, Magna, QNX and Texas Instruments.
