ASX edges up | Gold surges past $4400 amid turmoil

Good afternoon, and welcome to Proactive's first Markets in a Minute wrap for 2026.

Gold prices have shot up, touching just above USD 4404 an ounce, as investors turn into safe-havens amidst the ongoing political instability in South America, following the arrest of Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro.

Back home, it's been a smooth start to the new trading year - the ASX200 closed up on Monday, nudging just above .01 of a per cent.

Green

Civmec shot up after securing over $400 million in new contracts and extensions. The company highlighted a major package awarded by BHP at Port Hedland in WA.

Fenix Resources was also up on record quarterly iron ore shipments. The company reported strong operational performance and a cash increase of $21.2 million.

Red

Coronado Global Resources plunged following a second on-site fatality in less than a month - the latest one occurring at the Mammoth underground mine in Queensland.

Metallium was also down despite announcing a binding e-scrap supply agreement with Glencore. The deal provides long-term feedstock for Metallium’s US-based recycling technology.
