Shares of several furniture retailers surged on Friday morning after the Trump administration delayed a planned increase in tariffs on certain imported goods.
The higher duties had been scheduled to take effect on Thursday, but President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a year-long pause on increased levies for upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities.
Under the revised schedule, tariffs on upholstered furniture will remain at 25%, the level set in September, rather than rising to 30% at the start of 2026.
Trump cited ongoing trade discussions as the reason for the delay. In a social media post, he described tariffs as an “overwhelming benefit” to the US, warning that losing the ability to impose duties on imports would be a “terrible blow.”
Trump’s comments come as the White House awaits a Supreme Court decision on the legality of several of the administration’s existing tariffs.
Shares of RH (NYSE:RH) jumped 9.4% to about $196 on the update, Wayfair Inc (NYSE:W) was up 6.1% at $107, and Williams-Sonoma (NYSE:WSM) shares added 5% at $188.
