OpenAI is reorganizing its teams around audio-focused artificial intelligence as it prepares to launch its first audio-first consumer device, The Information has reported.
The company has merged engineering, product, and research divisions over the past two months to accelerate development of more natural, responsive voice technology, the publication reported.
OpenAI reportedly plans to release a next-generation audio model in early 2026 designed for human-like conversation. Improvements include true turn-taking, nuanced emotional expression, and ultra-low latency to reduce the delays and stiffness common in current voice assistants.
At the same time, OpenAI is developing audio-first hardware under the guidance of former Apple designer Jony Ive. The product lineup could include screenless speakers, AI smart glasses with directional microphones, and a portable “AI Pen” interface.
The move reflects a broader tech industry trend toward audio-driven experiences. Smart speakers are already common in homes, while Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Google’s “Audio Overviews” showcase new ways to interact with AI through sound. Tesla is integrating conversational AI into vehicles to manage tasks from navigation to climate control.
OpenAI executives, including CEO Sam Altman, have indicated that this “war on screens” aims to create hands-free, ambient AI experiences.
