SoftBank Group is racing against the clock to meet its $22.5 billion funding commitment to OpenAI before the year ends, sources told Reuters.
To raise the cash, the Japanese conglomerate is reportedly weighing margin loans and selling stakes in marquee holdings like Nvidia and T-Mobile.
The push comes as OpenAI looks ahead to another record-setting funding round, potentially valued at $100 billion, underscoring the surging appetite for AI ventures.
At the same time, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is preparing for the IPO of the company’s mobile payments unit, PayPay, expected early next year and projected to top $20 billion.
For investors, the moves highlight SoftBank’s strategy of balancing high-profile tech investments with the need for liquidity, as it continues to back rapidly growing AI and digital businesses.
