City broker welcomes BP's leadership change

BP Plc (LSE:BP.) abrupt leadership change has been warmly welcomed by Panmure Liberum, which views the departure of CEO Murray Auchinloss as a decisive break from what it sees as a period of strategic drift and underperformance.

Analyst Ashley Kelty notes that Auchinloss, who steps down with immediate effect, was closely associated with BP’s controversial pivot toward low-margin renewables under former chief executive Bernard Looney.

In Panmure Liberum’s view, that shift weighed heavily on returns and left BP lagging its major oil and gas peers for several years. The broker characterises Auchinloss’s tenure as uninspired, arguing that it failed to arrest declining competitiveness or restore investor confidence.

Incoming CEO Meg O’Neill, currently leading Woodside Energy, is seen as a materially positive appointment.

While acknowledging that O’Neill inherits a challenging situation (including a stretched balance sheet and an inflated cost base), Panmure Liberum believes her operational background and credibility in traditional energy markets could mark a turning point. In the interim, Carol Howle will serve as CEO until O’Neill formally takes up the role, although the timing of the handover remains unclear.

The broker suggests the move may reflect growing pressure from activist investor Elliott or a more assertive stance from the board.

Either way, Panmure Liberum expects investors to welcome a reset in tone and strategy, with hopes that BP will refocus on its core oil and gas operations and re-establish a clearer path to growth.
