Graphene Manufacturing Group shares jump after unveiling fast-charging graphene aluminium-ion battery

Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd (TSX-V:GMG, OTCQX:GMGMF) has announced new test results for its graphene aluminium-ion battery, which the company says can recharge in roughly six minutes.

The Brisbane-based company said the technology, known as the Graphene Aluminium-Ion Battery (G+AI), is being developed with the University of Queensland under a joint development agreement with Rio Tinto, with testing support from the Battery Innovation Center of Indiana in the US.

GMG reported that third-party testing by the Battery Innovation Center showed its current G+AI pouch cells achieved an energy density of 58 watt-hours per kilogram when charged in one hour and 26 watt-hours per kilogram when charged in six minutes.

During six-minute fast charging, the cells reached 62% of capacity in 3.2 minutes and maintained performance over hundreds of cycles, according to the company. The cells had a nominal voltage of approximately 3.0 volts.

"In my nearly five decades in the battery industry, I have rarely seen a technology with the disruptive potential of GMG's next-generation graphene aluminium-ion battery,” GMG non-executive director Bob Galyen said in a statement.

“With the possibility of charging from empty to full in around six minutes, this chemistry fundamentally changes how designers can think about electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and stationary storage.”

According to GMG, the G+AI battery is designed to target performance characteristics similar to high-power lithium titanate oxide (LTO) batteries, which are used in applications requiring rapid charging and long cycle life.

The company said LTO batteries are typically sold at premium prices and generated an estimated US$5.6 billion in global sales in 2025.

GMG also stated that, with further development, it believes the G+AI battery could eventually achieve energy densities exceeding 150 watt-hours per kilogram with one-hour charging and more than 75 watt-hours per kilogram with six-minute charging, although those targets have not yet been demonstrated.

The battery does not use lithium or copper and instead relies on aluminium foil as the substrate for both the cathode and anode, GMG highlighted.

“By leveraging aluminium and graphene, the GMG team is demonstrating a pathway to reduce reliance on traditional lithium-based systems while delivering step-change improvements in charge time and power density,” Galyen said.

“This is not an incremental tweak to existing cells - it is a new platform that can open markets and use cases that were previously uneconomic or impractical.”

The company also reported the development of a new chloride-free, non-corrosive hybrid electrolyte and said it has submitted an additional patent application covering these developments.

“We have rebuilt this battery in our weekly sprints from the ground up and developed completely new complex cathode, anode and electrolyte,” GMG managing director and CEO Craig Nicol said.

“This will provide a next generation fast charging battery technology currently not available in the world, and we look forward to sending out sample cells to test with partners in early 2026.”

The company said it sees potential applications for its battery across commercial vehicles, stationary storage, industrial equipment and other sectors that currently use high-power battery systems.

Shares of GMG surged more than 22% in early trade following the announcement.
