Drilling underway at Taiton Resources' Kingfish prospect

Taiton Resources Ltd (ASX:T88) has kicked off reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the Kingfish prospect within its Challenger West Project in South Australia, marking the start of a key gold-focused exploration push for the company.

The current campaign follows Taiton’s early November update outlining plans to test a series of structurally controlled gold targets at Kingfish. Drillers are on site and the rig is turning on the first hole, with work focused on a priority target corridor defined by earlier geochemical and geophysical surveys.

Location of the Highway and Challenger West project in South Australia.

“Taiton is pleased to commence drilling on these compelling targets for gold mineralisation due to its geological similarities to that of the Challenger Mine. We look forward to receiving the results of the drill program and will accordingly update the market in due course,” executive director David Low said.

Three-week RC program

The RC program is expected to run for about three weeks, with the company now well into its second week. Once drilling is complete, Taiton will dispatch samples to a laboratory in Adelaide for gold and multi-element assay, with results to be reported to the market after they are received and interpreted.

While the company has not disclosed total planned metreage, it notes the program is specifically designed to test gold and pathfinder element anomalism coincident with interpreted north-northeast-trending structures at Kingfish. These structures are considered prospective for structurally hosted gold mineralisation.

Targets defined by soil and magnetics

Drill targets have been generated from ultrafine soil sampling and detailed magnetic data, which together highlight several gold-in-soil anomalies and key structural features. The work has outlined multiple anomalous zones, with drill areas positioned across the strongest soil responses and along interpreted shear and fault trends within the Challenger West tenure.

The program aims to determine whether these anomalies represent bedrock gold mineralisation that could support follow-up drilling and a potential new discovery in the district.

Challenger-style geological setting

Kingfish lies about 40 kilometres west of the 1.2-million-ounce Challenger gold mine and sits in what Taiton describes as a geological setting analogous to the Challenger deposit. Challenger has historically been one of South Australia’s most significant high-grade underground gold operations.

By targeting structures and geochemical signatures similar to those seen at Challenger, Taiton is testing a regional concept that the same mineralising system may extend into the Challenger West area.

This is a popular area, with Marmota recently reporting that first detailed assays from its maiden drilling program at the Greenwood gold discovery have returned high-grade mineralisation between 17m and 67m from surface over a 900m strike length. This is a spectacular gold discovery with bonanza grades over almost 1 kilometre.

Part of broader project portfolio

Challenger West is one of three key assets in Taiton’s portfolio.

The company also holds the large-scale Highway Project in South Australia and the Kingsgate High Purity Quartz Project in New South Wales, providing exposure to both precious metals and industrial minerals.

With drilling now underway at Kingfish, near-term newsflow is expected to focus on progress updates from the RC program and subsequent assay results, which will guide decisions on follow-up drilling and broader exploration across the Challenger West project area.
