Scottish Mortgage and other UK funds with SpaceX stakes get boost from IPO reports

Shares in UK funds with sizeable stakes in SpaceX were given a boost by growing expectations that Elon Musk's rocket company will become the largest ever stock market listing next year.

Reports suggested the rocket launch and satellite group could be valued at around $1.5 trillion if it raises it planned $30 billion of new funds.

FTSE 100-listed Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LSE:SMT), which owns a stake representing 7.6% of its portfolio, saw its shares climb 2.7% on Wednesday morning, following further reports on the IPO.

Other SpaceX investors listed in London include The Schiehallion Fund (LSE:MNTN), Baillie Gifford US Growth Trust and Edinburgh Worldwide Investment Trust, have positions representing 9.4%, 11.25% and 13.3% of their portfolios, respectively.

Shares in Schiehallion jumped over 7%, while Edinburgh Worldwide was up 2.6% and Baillie Gifford 2%.

Seraphim Space Investment Trust PLC (LSE:SSIT), London's only dedicated 'spacetech' fund, saw its shares get a boost from the wider interest in the sector, despite not having a stake in SpaceX.

SpaceX is expected to generate around $15 billion in revenue in 2025, rising to around $24 billion next year, with much of that attributed to its Starlink satellite internet division.

Recent reports of a secondary share sale value the company at $800 billion, though Musk said on social media that valuations depend on progress for Starlink and the group's massive new Starship rocket.
