Impact Minerals managing director Dr Mike Jones talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion at Resourcing Tomorrow 2025 about a pivotal year for the company, marked by progress on its Lake Hope High Purity Alumina (HPA) project in Western Australia.
Jones explained that Impact Minerals completed a pre-feasibility study (PFS) on the Lake Hope project, which delivered a “billion dollar NPV in Australian dollars.” The company also acquired proprietary processing technology from a failed competitor, with the aim of integrating it with the Lake Hope feedstock to improve the project’s overall economics.
Located about 500 km east of Perth, Lake Hope is a salt lake with surface-level clay deposits rich in feedstock minerals. These can be processed into high-purity alumina, a material essential to energy transition technologies such as LEDs, semiconductors, and lithium-ion batteries.
“The most obvious one is light-emitting diodes… and that’s actually made from high-purity alumina,” Jones said, noting its use in thermal control in EV batteries.
Jones highlighted that the project’s unique processing method and shallow resource depth could make it “one of, if not the lowest cost producer of HPA globally.”
He added that 2026 will see pilot production and a scoping study, with the potential for North American expansion and a Nasdaq listing in 2027.
