Leading Chinese technology companies are training their latest artificial intelligence models outside the country to secure access to Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD) processors and sidestep US export controls, according to the Financial Times.
People familiar with the shift told the newspaper that Alibaba and ByteDance are among the firms now using data centres in Southeast Asia to train new large language models.
Training activity overseas has risen since Washington tightened restrictions in April on sales of Nvidia’s H20 chip to China. The report said most companies lease capacity from data centres owned by non-Chinese operators.
One exception is DeepSeek, which built up a supply of Nvidia hardware before the controls took effect and continues to train its models inside China.
DeepSeek is also working with domestic chipmakers, including Huawei, to refine and develop next-generation AI processors.
