BHP abandons a second, last-gasp bid for Anglo America

BHP Group Ltd (LSE:BHP, ASX:BHP) has stepped back from the idea of combining with Anglo American PLC (LSE:AAL), telling markets on Monday that early-stage talks with Anglo’s board have ended and that it will not pursue the matter further.

The miner said it still sees industrial logic in a tie-up and believes such a deal could have created substantial long-term value, but insisted it remains confident in its own growth pipeline.

The move closes the door, for now, on a renewed takeover storyline that had resurfaced over the weekend after reports suggested BHP had revisited the idea.

Any approach would have followed last year’s failed $49 billion bid, which Anglo repeatedly rejected before BHP walked away.

Analysts said the latest shift raised questions about BHP’s strategy.

The timing added to the intrigue. Anglo is less than three weeks from a shareholder vote on its proposed $50 billion merger with Canada’s Teck Resources, a deal pitched as a way to create a copper-heavy powerhouse.

BHP stepping back removes a potential complication, though it leaves open questions about the miner’s longer-term ambitions in consolidation.
