US weighs allowing Nvidia to sell H200 chips to China, sources say

The Trump administration is considering whether to permit Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD) to sell its H200 artificial intelligence chips to China, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The move would mark a notable shift in US export policy as relations between Washington and Beijing show signs of improvement.

The Commerce Department, which administers US export controls, is reviewing potential adjustments to rules that currently bar sales of advanced AI chips to China.

The sources highlighted that deliberations are preliminary and that any decision could change.

The White House and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nvidia did not address the review directly but said existing regulations prevent the company from offering a competitive data center GPU in China, effectively ceding one of the world’s largest markets to fast-growing foreign rivals.

The discussions come after President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached a trade and technology truce during a summit in Busan, South Korea, last month, easing tensions that had built over issues ranging from tariffs to semiconductor access.

Shares of Nvidia were on track to close at about $179 on Friday, down 3.7% this week amid AI valuation concerns and elevated investor expectations, despite smashing Q3 earnings estimates.
