Cobalt Blue to process Black Mass at BHTC

Cobalt Blue to process Black Mass at BHTC

Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd commercial manager Joel Crane talked with Proactive about the company’s decision to reposition its Broken Hill Technology Centre (BHTC) to begin processing lithium-ion battery black mass.

Crane explained that since 2021, the company has invested more than A$15 million into developing and testing its cobalt refining flow sheet. With that testwork now largely complete, spare capacity at the BHTC will be redirected to support battery recycling initiatives.

“We're at this point the only refiners within Australia that can do it,” Crane said, referring to black mass processing. “We hope that others follow us.”
