Jeff Bezos, former Amazon CEO, is reportedly returning to an executive role, taking on the position of co-CEO at the AI startup Project Prometheus.
According to a New York Times report citing anonymous sources, Project Prometheus aims to use artificial intelligence to accelerate the design, testing, and production of physical technologies in sectors including computing, aerospace, automobiles, and industrial systems.
Bezos will share leadership with Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist who previously worked at Google’s experimental “moonshot factory” X and ran health technology company Verily.
Bajaj has experience building AI-driven organizations, and the two executives are expected to guide the startup’s development of AI applications for physical systems, distinct from the digital and language model AI pursued by companies like OpenAI.
Project Prometheus has reportedly already recruited nearly 100 employees, including talent from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta.
Details on the company’s location and specific projects remain limited.
This represents Bezos’s first formal operational role at a company since stepping down as Amazon CEO in 2021. In the interim, he has maintained a focus on his aerospace venture Blue Origin, which recently completed the first successful landing of its New Glenn booster.
