International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM) on Wednesday unveiled its IBM Quantum Nighthawk, its most advanced quantum processor to date that is designed to deliver quantum advantage by the end of 2026.
IBM said the new processor features 120 qubits with 218 next-generation tunable couplers, representing a 20% increase in couplers compared to its previous Heron processor.
"We believe that IBM is the only company that is positioned to rapidly invent and scale quantum software, hardware, fabrication, and error correction to unlock transformative applications," Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, said in a statement.
The company also introduced its IBM Quantum Loon, an experimental processor that demonstrates all key components needed for fault-tolerant quantum computing.
IBM noted that it aims to deliver the Quantum Loon to customers by 2029.
IBM also announced that it has achieved efficient quantum error correction decoding with a 10-times speedup over current leading approaches, which it completed one year ahead of schedule.
Quantum computers could eventually solve problems that would take traditional computers thousands of years, although currently its chips are prone to errors.
IBM shares rose nearly 2% to $319.41 in midday trading on Wednesday.
