Intel AI chief Sachin Katti departs to join OpenAI

Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC, ETR:INL)’s chief technology and artificial intelligence officer, Sachin Katti, is leaving the chipmaker to lead compute infrastructure efforts at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Katti, who had held the top AI role at Intel for seven months, announced the move on social media, saying he was “excited for the opportunity to work with Greg Brockman, Sam Altman and the OpenAI team on building out the compute infrastructure for AGI.”

Intel confirmed Katti’s departure and said CEO Lip-Bu Tan will take over oversight of the AI and Advanced Technologies Groups.

Analysts at Wedbush Securities called the move “modestly disappointing” for Intel, noting Katti had been in his position for only six months, but said it did not signal deeper issues within the company.

“We view Intel’s AI efforts (for now) as less important than its progress in restoring competitiveness in its manufacturing operations and core compute businesses,” Wedbush wrote in a note.

Intel shares were down about 1% in premarket trading on Tuesday.
