Imaging Biometrics Ltd (LSE:IBAI, OTCQB:IQAIF) has announced the successful completion of its phase I clinical trial of gallium maltolate, an experimental oral treatment for recurrent glioblastoma, the aggressive brain cancer that remains one of the most difficult to treat.
The study, carried out by the Medical College of Wisconsin, met all of its safety and pharmacokinetic targets, with no significant adverse events reported among the 26 participants.
Of these, 24 were evaluated for safety and 22 for early signs of efficacy. The company said patients tolerated the treatment well and that one participant continues under care, suggesting potential clinical benefit.
“This achievement marks a pivotal step forward in our mission to bring novel, mechanism-driven therapies to patients with GBM,” said Trevor Brown, chief executive of Imaging Biometrics.
“We are encouraged by the data and the continued treatment of one long-standing patient, which speaks to GaM’s potential clinical benefit.”
Gallium maltolate is designed to disrupt tumour metabolism by targeting the role of iron in cancer cell growth. Preclinical research indicates it may work in combination with existing treatments, potentially opening a new therapeutic avenue for glioblastoma patients.
With the first stage completed, Imaging Biometrics said it is now working with leading cancer centres to begin a Phase 2 trial that will focus on testing the drug’s effectiveness and expanding its clinical use.
