Nvidia boss warns US risks losing AI lead to China

Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, ETR:NVD) chief executive Jensen Huang has warned that China is on the verge of overtaking the United States in the global race for artificial intelligence dominance.

Speaking at the Financial Times Future of AI Summit, Huang said Beijing’s heavy subsidies for energy and technology were accelerating progress by local firms, while US regulations risked stifling innovation.

“China is going to win the AI race,” he said, arguing that America’s growing “cynicism” and layers of state-level rules could hold back its developers.

By contrast, China’s state-backed incentives have made energy and computing power “effectively free” for AI companies, he added.

Huang, whose company is barred from selling its most advanced Blackwell AI chips to China under US export restrictions, urged Washington to re-engage with Chinese developers rather than isolate them.

“A policy that causes America to lose half of the world’s AI developers hurts us more,” he warned.

The Nvidia chief said the US must “race ahead” to maintain leadership, adding that regulatory and export barriers were already pushing Chinese rivals to build their own advanced semiconductors.

Nvidia, now the world’s most valuable listed company at $4.7 trillion, has seen its Chinese sales hit hard by ongoing trade tensions.
