Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang is due to meet Technology Secretary Liz Kendall on Wednesday during a visit to the UK, where the chipmaker is eyeing further expansion, according to Sky News.
The meeting comes as the US company, which leads the global market for artificial intelligence chips, positions Britain as a key growth territory.
Huang is in the country to address the Cambridge Union and collect an award from the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
His talks with Kendall follow a £2 billion UK investment announced by Nvidia in June and come as the government promotes AI as a driver of economic growth through new ‘AI Growth Zones’.
The Labour government hopes private sector investment in data infrastructure will support its economic plans ahead of next month’s budget. Ms Kendall, who has been in post for two months, is expected to use the meeting to strengthen ties with Nvidia’s leadership.
While ministers welcome AI investment, concerns persist over job losses linked to its wider use, especially as the government explores ways to cut £45 billion from the civil service through automation.
Two growth zones have been confirmed so far, in Oxfordshire and Northumberland. Further sites are expected in Scotland, Wales and possibly Northern Ireland.
