Retail investors on two UK platforms poured into a mix of large financials, big tech and crypto-related names and resource security plays in October, according to the latest trading data.
On AJ Bell, which offers trading in all UK stocks, plus most of those available in New York and major European exchanges, investor activity showed a tilt toward income and blue-chip names.
Aviva PLC (LSE:AV.), GSK PLC (LSE:GSK, NYSE:GSK) and M&G PLC (LSE:MNG) topped the platform’s most-bought list, ahead of Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, ETR:NVD) and Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (LSE:RR.).
On the sell side, many investors also took profits in many of the same names, with NVIDIA the most sold share, along with Rolls-Royce, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD, ETR:AMD), GSK, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and BP PLC (LSE:BP.).
On Robinhood UK, which currently only allows UK investors to buy US stocks, bitcoin-adjacent stocks led the charge, with MARA Holdings (Marathon Digital) and IREN Ltd (Iris Energy) taking the top two spots among the most traded names.
The pair were joined by NVIDIA, Tesla, and Robinhood itself in the top five, alongside another crypto infrastructure name CleanSpark Inc (NASDAQ:CLSK), AMD, Nebius Group and two rare earths companies USA Rare Earth Inc and Critical Metals Corp.
Dan Lane, lead analyst at Robinhood UK, noted that Marathon Digital’s decision to sell half the Bitcoin it mined in September, its first major sale in over a year, signalled “a move from ‘hold at all costs’ to more of a crypto treasury strategy.”
He added that IREN’s $875 million capital raise to fund AI-linked data centre expansion “might be behind appetite for the stock”.
Rare-earth producers made the list amid renewed focus on resource security after Beijing threatened to tighten export controls as part of negotiations with US President Donald Trump.
It was a mixed month for Tesla, which reported profits down more than a quarter despite record deliveries. Higher AI-related chip spending and lost emissions credit revenue offset some of the gains from strong US sales.
