Uber to offer driverless rides in 2026

Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER, ETR:UT8) announced on Wednesday that it expects to launch an autonomous taxi service in late 2026, choosing the San Francisco Bay Area as its first market.

In July, the ride-hailing company revealed it was developing a robotaxi with electric vehicle maker Lucid and the self-driving technology company Nuro Inc.

Uber said Lucid recently delivered test vehicles to Nuro and said it plans to have 100 test vehicles on the road in the months ahead.

Uber plans to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid-based autonomous taxis in multiple locations within six years.

On Tuesday, Uber reported that it is developing robotaxis in partnership with automaker Stellantis and Nvidia, with production of at least 5,000 vehicles expected to begin in 2028.

Uber has also partnered with Waymo on autonomous taxis in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta.

Uber Technologies shares rose 0.5% to $95.92 in late-morning trading on Wednesday.
