Tech Bytes: $46 million lift-off for Hypersonix and Australia’s clean-fuel hypersonic future

Australia’s aerospace ambitions just kicked into high gear.

Brisbane-based start-up Hypersonix Launch Systems has secured a major shot in the arm — a US$46 million (A$70 million) Series A funding round backed by global defence investors and the Australian government — to propel its hydrogen-fuelled scramjet engines from prototype to production.

The round, led by defence-focused institutional investors including High Tor Capital, Saab Ventures and RKKVC, also drew participation from the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) and the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC). The NRFC’s A$10 million equity stake marks its first investment in the defence sector, underscoring Canberra’s growing appetite to back sovereign capability in advanced aerospace.

The funding will accelerate flight-testing of Hypersonix’s SPARTAN scramjet engine — a fully 3D-printed, hydrogen-fuelled propulsion system designed to fly between Mach 5 and Mach 12 — and expand manufacturing at the company’s Queensland base.

“We are extremely proud to have the NRFC join our cap table,” said Hypersonix CEO Matt Hill. “Their investment is a significant endorsement of our mission and the extraordinary team behind it. This is a defining moment for Hypersonix, and one that reflects the growing national recognition of the need for sovereign aerospace capability.”

Global ambitions in a fast-moving race

Founded in 2019, Hypersonix is among a handful of companies worldwide developing reusable, air-breathing hypersonic platforms — systems that use the atmosphere for oxygen rather than carrying onboard oxidisers like rockets. The result is lighter, more efficient vehicles capable of repeatable high-speed flight, opening opportunities across defence, space-launch and ultra-fast transport.

At Mach 5–12, Hypersonix’s vehicles would theoretically be able to cover the distance from Sydney to Singapore in under an hour — roughly five times faster than a commercial jet.

The company already works with NASA and the US Department of Defense, and its SPARTAN engine will power the DART AE demonstrator — a 3.5-metre-long vehicle set to fly under the Pentagon’s HyCAT program early next year. The mission is expected to mark the world’s first sustained hypersonic flight using green hydrogen.

“SPARTAN is more than a propulsion system,” said Hypersonix co-founder and CTO Dr Michael Smart. “It’s a breakthrough in reusable hypersonic flight. What we’re building is a sovereign platform that’s clean, cost-effective, and engineered for the real world.”

Strategic signal for sovereign capability

The NRFC and QIC backing represents more than funding — it’s a statement that Australia intends to move from research collaborator to full-scale aerospace manufacturer. The investment will help Hypersonix establish advanced manufacturing facilities in Queensland, create high-skilled engineering jobs and fast-track development of its second platform, VISR — an 8-metre-long, fully reusable, hydrogen-fuelled aircraft designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

  • Flight milestones: The upcoming DART AE test flights will be pivotal in proving SPARTAN’s performance under real-world conditions.
  • Manufacturing scale-up: Moving from prototypes to serial production is the hardest leap in aerospace. Hypersonix’s 3D-printing and hydrogen-fuel systems will face their biggest test yet.

  • Infrastructure: The company has partnered with Southern Launch in South Australia to establish dedicated hypersonic flight-testing facilities.

Hypersonix sits at the intersection of green propulsion, advanced manufacturing and national-security technology — three of the fastest-moving frontiers in global capital markets. The backing from sovereign and institutional investors offers validation and staying power, helping de-risk development as the company transitions from research to production.

The bigger picture

A hydrogen-powered scramjet capable of Mach 12 speeds once sounded like science fiction; Hypersonix is turning it into exportable reality. With $46 million in new funding, NASA- and Pentagon-backed tests on the horizon and government support at home, the company isn’t just chasing speed records — it’s redefining what “sovereign capability” means for Australia’s next-generation aerospace industry.
