Ondine Biomedical shares rise as ICU study shows strong infection-control results

Shares in Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI, OTC:OBIMF) climbed 4% to 13p, extending their year-to-date gain to 44%, after the company reported encouraging results from its Steriwave ICU pilot study at Royal Columbian Hospital in Canada.

The study showed that Steriwave, Ondine’s non-antibiotic nasal photodisinfection treatment, significantly reduced harmful pathogens in intensive care patients.

By day eight, only 4.5% of treated patients carried opportunistic bacteria compared with 22.4% in the control group, an 80% relative reduction in colonisation.

Researchers found a marked fall in overall nasal bacterial load, with 69% of swabs in the treatment arm showing no growth, versus 26% in controls. No product-related adverse events were reported.

Ondine said the results strengthen the case for universal nasal decolonisation to prevent ICU-acquired infections, which affect up to 13% of critical care patients.

Chief executive Carolyn Cross described the findings as a “significant milestone” demonstrating Steriwave’s potential as a rapid, resistance-free infection-control tool.
