Futura Medical reports encouraging condom test results

Sexual health firm hopes to seek approval for its extended life condom later this year

Sexual health product group Futura Medical (LON:FUM) has reported progress in developing an innovative new condom.

Futura said it had received encouraging initial data from tests of a modified manufacturing process for its CSD500 condom, which aims to help men to maintain a firmer erection during intercourse.

Research has shown that 46% of men had experienced some loss of sensitivity when using a condom during sexual intercourse, which can lead to loss of erection.

Futura is adapting its manufacturing process to extend the product's shelf life to meet condom industry requirements.

Chairman John Clarke said: "While further testing is ongoing, we are encouraged by the preliminary accelerated testing data received so far and remain on track for a regulatory filing of an extended shelf life product later this year."

Futura said a clinical study of its diclofenac, ibuprofen and methyl salicylate topical pain relief gels began in March 2015 and it expects headline results by the middle of next month.

It is also at an advanced stage of preparations for a clinical study of its MED2002 topical gel to treat erectile dysfunction.

Futura has strengthened development and production in the past year by taking on more full-time scientific and technical staff and by creating two separate teams for clinical development and for chemistry, manufacturing and controls.

"This structure, and the strength of our balance sheet, will support us in the execution of our business plan," Clarke said. Shares in Futura were flat at 40.5p.
