Markets in a Minute: ASX slips as gold stocks tumble, Woodside and Beetaloo shine

The ASX 200 closed lower Wednesday, dropping 0.71 of a per cent after setting a new 52-week high.

It's been a mixed bag with sectors - energy was strongest - up 1.29 per cent whilst materials was hit hard - down more than 3 per cent.

And in other investment news, Webull has lowered its minimum ASX trading fee to just one dollar — making it the lowest-cost CHESS-sponsored broker in Australia. The new fee structure took effect from October 20th.

Green

Woodside Energy Group was up after lifting its 2025 production guidance and trimming capital expenditure. The company reported a 1% quarterly production rise and now expects full-year output of up to 197 million barrels of oil equivalent.

Beetaloo Energy Australia was also up after its quarterly update highlighted record operational progress. The company completed Australia’s largest-ever fracture stimulation at its Carpentaria-5H well.

Red

Newmont Corporation took a dive as gold prices pulled back sharply overnight.

Several other ASX-listed gold stocks were also down on no news reflecting the downturn - including Northern Star Resources and Evolution Mining.
