OpenAI launches AI-powered web browser ChatGPT Atlas

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser designed with its flagship AI assistant at the core, marking the company’s latest step in integrating artificial intelligence into everyday online activity.

The browser debuted globally on macOS today, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android expected soon.

The launch positions OpenAI more directly in competition with established browser and search platforms, such as Google’s Chrome.

According to the company, Atlas reimagines the traditional browsing experience by bringing ChatGPT directly into the web environment.

The browser allows users to interact with websites through a built-in Ask ChatGPT sidebar, enabling real-time assistance such as summarizing content, answering questions, editing text or code, and completing tasks, all without leaving the page.

OpenAI described the launch as an opportunity to rethink how people use the web, positioning Atlas as a browser that moves toward a “super-assistant” capable of understanding user goals and context.

A key feature of Atlas is browser memory, which lets ChatGPT recall relevant context from websites a user visits and apply that knowledge in future interactions.

The browser also introduces an agent mode, enabling ChatGPT to perform actions across the web—such as researching, organizing plans, or booking appointments.

OpenAI says this mode is now faster and more capable than previous versions, and it is available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.

In addition to its AI capabilities, Atlas includes standard browser functions like tabs, bookmarks, and import options for saved passwords and history from other browsers.

The new tab interface combines search and chat, offering summarized AI responses alongside traditional search results, links, and media tabs for images, videos, and news.
