Century Lithium Corp. (TSX-V:LCE, OTCQX:CYDVF) has announced that its Lithium Extraction Facility in Amargosa Valley, Nevada, has successfully produced lithium hydroxide for the first time.
The material was derived from lithium carbonate processed from the company’s 100%-owned Angel Island lithium project near Silver Peak, Nevada.
According to the company, the lithium hydroxide samples were produced on-site in a batch process using conventional liming conversion with calcium hydroxide to achieve high-purity results exceeding 99.5%.
The process used Century Lithium’s patent-pending alkaline leach and Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology.
"The lithium hydroxide samples produced by our team represent another important milestone for the company," Century Lithium CEO Bill Willoughby said in a statement.
"Up until this point, Century's efforts have focused on making lithium carbonate as the end product for Angel Island. By producing high-purity lithium hydroxide, we show that Angel Island can supply another major lithium product for the domestic market."
Century Lithium said it is also developing a direct lithium conversion (DLC) process to produce lithium hydroxide directly from lithium chloride solution.
The company said that this approach could eliminate lithium carbonate as an intermediate step, potentially simplifying operations and reducing energy and operating costs.
