Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) is pushing users to upgrade to Windows 11 with new artificial intelligence features, as free security support for Windows 10 officially ends.
The updates reflect Microsoft’s push to integrate generative AI across Windows, competing with Apple, Google, and startups like Anthropic and OpenAI.
Millions of computers worldwide still run Windows 10, introduced a decade ago, but Microsoft launched Windows 11 in 2021. Adoption has been uneven, particularly among users with older devices that cannot support the newer system.
On Thursday, Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 updates centered on its AI chatbot, Copilot. A new voice mode allows users to say “Hey, Copilot” to interact with their laptops, rather than typing or clicking. All Windows 11 users now also have access to Copilot Vision, which analyzes and gives feedback on documents, video games, and other on-screen activity.
Microsoft is offering paid extended support through October 2026, with some users eligible for free extensions, but many older devices will remain unsupported.
