Tuesday's agenda - Investors will smell the coffee as Costa owner Whitbread reports

Ashtead and Whitbread lead the equity-related news while UK consumer price index and the start of the Federal Reserve means Tuesday is likely to be busy.

FTSE 100 equipment rental company Ashtead (LON:AHT) is to report its end of year results on Tuesday.

Sheridan Adams at The Share Centre said: “These figures will attract a fair amount of investor interest following some downbeat comments from US rival United Rentals in late May about the level of activity it experienced during that month.”

Ashtead, which generates a large proportion of its sales in the US, published a very upbeat third quarter trading statement in March.

It reported a record level of pre-tax profit for the first nine months and forecast full year figures ahead of its previous expectations.

Meanwhile, Costa Coffee owner Whitbread (LON:WTB) will update the market with its first quarter results.

Shares have fallen back since it reported excellent full year results in late April and the market will be keen to hear if trading at the group’s Costa Coffee and Premier Inn chains remains strong.

To economic data and UK consumer price index figures are due out tomorrow.

Inflation will be at the top of the agenda in the UK on the release of consumer price index figures due out at 9.30am.

The consumer price index is the most widely followed indicator of inflation though there is a very real possibility that the UK could see price deflation continue.

Last month saw the UK go into deflation for the first time since March 1960 and Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, has said he expects any period of negative inflation to be temporary.

Meanwhile, tomorrow also sees the start of the monthly two-day Federal Reserve meeting in the US.

Investors will be looking for clues as to when an interest rate hike may be likely to take place.

Significant announcements expected -

Final: Ashtead,(LON:AHT), Dji Holdings (LON:DJI), Consort Medical PLC (LON:CSRT)

Interim: Pressure Technologies Plc (LON:PRES).

Trading Statement: Whitbread (LON:WTB)

Economic: UK – Consumer Price index, Producer Price Index, US –, Housing starts, Federal Reserve meeting begins.
