Tech Bytes: Gold’s digital dawn — imagining a new era for the world’s oldest asset

Gold has always been a paradox — timeless, yet stubbornly traditional. Now, the World Gold Council (WGC) wants to imagine what happens when one of humanity’s oldest stores of value goes fully digital.

In a new report titled A New Golden Age: Imagining the Future of Digital Gold, released in partnership with UK futures consultancy The Future Laboratory, the WGC explores how technology could reshape gold’s role in finance, culture and everyday life.

Rather than predicting the future, the report applies a “what if” lens — envisioning how digitalisation could make gold more accessible, transparent and relevant in an age dominated by tokenised assets and decentralised finance.

“Technology has the power to transform the global gold industry, making it more accessible, transparent and trusted than ever before,” said World Gold Council CEO David Tait. “In partnering with The Future Laboratory, we asked ‘what if…?’ to explore how digital gold could reshape investment, technology and culture.”

From safe haven to digital ecosystem

Gold remains the world’s preeminent hedge — a $5.1 trillion market held by investors and central banks. But as blockchain, tokenisation and digital assets redraw the boundaries of finance, even this ancient asset faces a crossroads.

The WGC report envisions a future where digitalisation could “be the catalyst to broaden the user base and demand for gold… [enabling] innovative gold distribution products fronted by popular brands, new investment opportunities that untether the digital value of gold from physical gold items, and ‘phygital’ gold products that offer utility in the physical and virtual worlds.”

Digitalisation is already taking shape through the WGC’s Gold247 initiative, which aims to modernise gold ownership and trading via tools like the Gold Bar Integrity database and the proposed Standard Gold Unit (SGU), a framework to separate gold’s monetary value from its physical form.

Three futures for digital gold

The WGC and The Future Laboratory map out three conceptual “territories” for digital gold’s evolution:

  • Pervasive Digital Gold: New infrastructure could enable frictionless gold trading, instant collateralisation, and blockchain-backed transparency. Investors might be able to buy directly from vaults, swap locations instantly, or verify the social impact of every ounce.
  • The DeFi Gold Rush: In decentralised finance ecosystems, tokenised gold could generate yield through staking or lending protocols — introducing risk, but also a new dimension of utility.
  • The Next Gold Frontier: Digital and physical innovations could embed gold into culture — from NFTs tied to real gold bars to branded micro-investment apps and fractional ownership designed for Gen Z investors.

Together, these scenarios describe how gold might evolve from a static store of value into a dynamic, interoperable digital asset class.

Reimagining trust and transparency

At the heart of the report is a call to rebuild trust through technology — an essential step if gold is to compete with today’s digital-native assets. Blockchain verification, quantum-safe cryptography and AI-driven transparency are highlighted as tools to prove that gold has been “responsibly mined, refined and traded”.

Tait said the WGC now wants the industry “to rethink gold not just as a trusted asset today, but as a digital asset for tomorrow.”

That reimagining could see gold move beyond vaults and trading floors — into DeFi protocols, digital wallets and even the metaverse.

For the world’s oldest asset, the next frontier may not be found underground, but online.
