Unexpected success for BP could burnish the investment narrative

BP PLC (LSE:BP.) has scored an unexpected legal victory that adds fresh momentum to its turnaround story.

The energy group has won an arbitration case against US liquefied natural gas supplier Venture Global, a dispute that centred on the start date for contracted gas deliveries from the Calcasieu Pass facility in Louisiana.

The size of the award will be determined next year, but BP has indicated it will seek more than $1bn.

Citi’s analysts describe the outcome as another “positive element” in BP’s broader recovery narrative.

The decision is notable, they say, because Venture Global had recently prevailed in a similar case brought by Shell. The contrasting results suggest that BP’s contract was more tightly written, giving it the upper hand this time.

The money itself is hardly transformational against BP’s enterprise value of about $130bn, but the symbolism matters. T

he company has been working to streamline its operations, reduce debt and refocus its upstream portfolio after years of strategic drift. It has also enjoyed recent exploration success in Brazil, reinforcing investor confidence in its core business.

For Citi, the ruling reinforces the impression of a company quietly getting back on track.

The analysts see BP’s restructuring and stronger balance sheet as underappreciated by the market.

The arbitration win, while modest in financial terms, fits neatly into a picture of progress that is beginning to look more convincing.
