Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is facing a fresh investigation in the United States after claims that its self-driving cars have run red lights, driven on the wrong side of the road and committed other traffic violations.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had received 58 reports of alleged offences involving vehicles using Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” mode, which is fitted to about 2.9 million cars.
The agency said its preliminary review would examine the frequency and safety risks linked to the software.
In this optional mode, Teslas can change lanes and make turns without direct input, though drivers must remain ready to take control. Regulators said at least six collisions occurred after cars moved off while the lights were still red, four of which caused injuries.
