Rishi Sunak has joined Microsoft and artificial intelligence start-up Anthropic as a paid adviser, returning to the tech world he championed as prime minister.
The appointments were approved by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments, which barred him from lobbying ministers or helping the companies secure UK contracts for two years.
Sunak said he was “delighted” to work with “two of the world’s leading tech firms” and would donate all earnings to The Richmond Project, a charity he founded to improve numeracy.
His role at Microsoft will focus on global strategic trends, while at Anthropic, he will contribute to internal research on AI policy.
The move follows Sunak’s efforts in government to position Britain as a leader in safe AI development, including hosting an international summit in 2023.
