Trilogy Metals (NYSEAMERICAN:TMQ) stock surged more than 220% after it announced that the US government is acquiring a 10% equity stake in the Canadian-based mineral exploration company with mining interests in Alaska.
The US Department of War (DOW) is investing approximately $35.6 million to support exploration and development of critical mineral resources in Alaska’s Ambler Mining District, specifically the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP), held by Ambler Metals LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Trilogy Metals and South32 Limited.
Under the agreement, the DOW will have the option to appoint an independent director to Trilogy Metals’ board for three years and can increase its stake through additional warrants tied to the completion of the proposed Ambler Road infrastructure project.
The investment aligns with US efforts to strengthen domestic supply chains for essential minerals including copper, cobalt, zinc, and lead, which are critical for energy, defense, and manufacturing.
“This proposed partnership with the US Government represents a significant milestone for Trilogy Metals and for the development of a secure, domestic supply of critical minerals for America in Alaska,” Trilogy metals CEO Tony Giardini said in a statement.
“The Department of War’s interest underscores the strategic importance of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in supporting US energy, technology, and national security priorities.”
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, Congressional reauthorization of the Defense Production Act, and the completion of the US Foreign Ownership, Control, or Influence (FOCI) review.
