OpenAI taps Korea’s chip giants for $500bn AI plan

When artificial intelligence dreams run into hardware limits, partnerships become essential. OpenAI said Wednesday it will team up with

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to supply the advanced memory chips needed for “Stargate,” a planned $500 billion network of AI-focused data centers.

The announcement followed CEO Sam Altman’s meeting in Seoul with President Lee Jae Myung and senior Korean executives, who framed the agreements as a chance to boost the country’s semiconductor sector and create jobs.

Samsung and SK Hynix, the world’s top memory makers, pledged to ramp up output to meet soaring AI demands.

OpenAI also struck deals with SK Telecom to explore a local AI hub dubbed Stargate Korea, and with Samsung affiliates to research floating data centers that could ease land use pressures and cut cooling costs.

Stargate, backed by SoftBank, Oracle and the Trump administration, plans to invest heavily in next-generation AI infrastructure worldwide.
