PG&E bets big with $70bn spending pledge

PG&E Corp (NYSE:PCG) is betting big on the power of data.

The California utility said Monday it plans to invest $73 billion in transmission upgrades by 2030 as data centers fuel an unprecedented surge in electricity demand.

In July, the company estimated it would need to serve 10 gigawatts of new demand from data center projects over the next decade.

U.S. power use is forecast to reach record levels in 2025 and 2026, according to the Energy Information Administration, largely due to artificial intelligence adoption.

PG&E, long criticised for its role in sparking deadly wildfires, is also putting money into safety. Its 2026–2028 plan includes nearly 700 miles of underground lines and 500 miles of grid upgrades aimed at cutting wildfire risk.
