For millions of TikTok users scrolling through dance clips and memes, nothing may seem different.
Behind the scenes, though, a $14 billion shake-up is underway.
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an order approving the separation of TikTok’s US arm from Chinese owner ByteDance, setting off a complex process that could reshape the app’s future.
The plan calls for a new American joint venture controlled by US investors, with Oracle at the centre as technology and security partner.
Venture groups including Andreessen Horowitz and Silver Lake are also backing the deal, alongside high-profile names such as Michael Dell and Rupert Murdoch.
But several tests loom. The new venture must agree its structure, prove it can manage the app’s data and algorithm securely, and reassure a sceptical Congress. On top of that, Beijing still has to grant final approval.
