Is the US Dollar’s Safe Haven Era Ending?

Is the US Dollar’s Safe Haven Era Ending?

Forex.com Market Analyst David Scutt talked with Proactive about the growing debate over whether the US dollar’s long-standing role as the world’s safe haven currency could be at risk.

Scutt explained that the US dollar has historically dominated due to the size of the US economy, its capital markets, and its use in global trade and settlement. He said: “When you talk about trade settlement, still the US dollar is predominantly where it’s used. And in times of crisis, what’s happened is that there’s been a flock back to the US dollar because of those very reasons.”

However, he highlighted concerns that are beginning to weigh on investor confidence. These include inflation drifting away from the Federal Reserve’s 2% target and potential political interference in central bank decision-making. According to Scutt, such developments raise questions about the dollar’s future appeal.

The interview also covered possible alternatives such as gold, cryptocurrencies, the Swiss franc, and the Chinese yuan. Scutt noted that while some of these assets have gained traction, none yet have the liquidity or global reach to fully replace the dollar. He added that money managers and central banks are already diversifying currency exposure, with increased allocations to the euro and gold.
