Race Oncology CEO & managing director Dr Daniel Tillett talked with Proactive about three new patent applications the company has lodged relating to its late-stage cancer drug, (E,E)-bisantrene. These filings follow significant discoveries into the drug's chemistry and behaviour under light exposure.
Dr Tillett explained that the original form of bisantrene was a mixture of three isomers that could convert into each other when exposed to light, affecting the drug's activity. “Most people don't work in the dark,” he said, highlighting the inconsistency in patient dosing depending on light exposure prior to administration.
Race Oncology’s team has now isolated and developed a pure version containing only the active isomer, providing a consistent and reliable formulation for patients. The company believes this breakthrough delivers what is known as “composition of matter” intellectual property protection — the strongest form of IP in drug development.
The new findings also enable Race Oncology to re-utilise the original formulation, now with much greater control and value. According to Dr Tillett, “It fundamentally changes everything about the company and the opportunity that it has.”
To accelerate value, Race Oncology is seeking fast-track examination of the patents, which could assist commercial negotiations and partnerships.
