Altech Batteries highlights strong ESG progress with climate credentials, risk oversight

Altech Batteries Ltd (ASX:ATC, OTC:ALTHF) has released its latest environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure report, underscoring its efforts to deliver sustainable energy solutions while embedding transparency, accountability, and climate resilience into its operations.

The company said the disclosures, aligned with the World Economic Forum’s Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics, demonstrate its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and long-term enterprise value creation. The update highlights progress across climate initiatives, anti-corruption measures, responsible land use and biodiversity management, as well as community engagement — all aimed at bringing its projects in Germany, Australia and Malaysia in line with global best practice.

Climate credentials and green ratings

A key focus of the report is Altech’s progress on greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions and climate-aligned project design.

The company’s German battery materials coating plant has been awarded a “Medium Green” rating from the Centre of International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), signalling its suitability for future green bond financing. The plant is expected to operate with near-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, thanks to electrified processes powered by renewable energy, including on-site solar.

Meanwhile, Altech’s flagship CERENERGY® sodium-chloride solid-state battery project in Germany received a “Dark Green” rating — the highest possible — from S&P Global. Independent analysis suggests the CERENERGY battery design could produce emissions around one-third of comparable lithium-ion batteries.

A study by the University of Bochum also found CERENERGY batteries generate 50% less GHG emissions than conventional lithium-ion products.

Governance and stakeholder engagement

The report highlights Altech’s governance framework, including its Board Charter, annual evaluations of directors and emphasis on ESG competencies within board skills.

While the five-member board is currently all male, Altech says it is mindful of diversity considerations as its activities expand. Directors bring experience across Australia, Malaysia and Germany, reflecting the company’s international footprint.

Stakeholder engagement is described as a priority, with the company identifying material issues via a double materiality assessment. Greenhouse gas emissions ranked as the top environmental issue for stakeholders, while employee health and safety was the most significant social matter.

Ethical standards and anti-corruption

Altech reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on corruption, citing policies such as a comprehensive Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy, and Whistleblower Policy.

The company said there have been no reported incidents of corruption and it is committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethical behaviour across its global operations.

Risk oversight and climate opportunities

Altech’s risk management framework incorporates both financial and non-financial risks, including ESG factors.

The company noted climate change and the energy transition present significant opportunities, aligning with its core purpose to revolutionise energy storage and battery materials. Engagement with KPMG, CICERO and S&P underscores the integration of ESG into financing and project planning.

Responsible land and water use

The report confirms environmental approvals for the 120-megawatt-hour (MWh) CERENERGY plant in Saxony and details measures to reduce the impact of operations on biodiversity.

A closed water cycle at the CERENERGY plant is expected to allow up to 90% of process water to be reused, with the remainder treated and discharged in line with regulations.

Social responsibility

On the social front, Altech reported a headcount of 24 permanent employees as of June 30, 2025, with operations spanning Australia, Germany and Malaysia.

While formal diversity policies are not yet in place, the company said it is committed to evaluating such initiatives as it grows. Employee health and safety remains a key focus, with risk assessments, emergency drills and ongoing training part of its safety culture.

Further innovation

Altech also pointed to advances at its Perth R&D laboratory, where it developed its Silumina Anodes lithium-ion battery material with up to 55% higher energy density than traditional graphite anodes. Independent qualification with Fraunhofer IKTS in Germany is expected to support early market entry.
