UPDATE - Deltex Medical gets Boston hospital boost

The B&W has made the enhanced recovery protocols, including ODM, the default protocol for all colorectal surgeries

-- adds detail, share price--

Deltex Medical’s (LON:DEMG) blood flow monitoring system is to be recommended for all colorectal surgeries at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts after it delivered significant benefits for patients.

Brigham and Women’s is one of a string of US hospitals where Deltex has installed trainers to help surgical staff get the best out of its oesophageal Doppler monitoring (ODM) monitors.

Doctors from the hospital presented results from an enhanced recovery programme for colorectal operations to the 2015 meeting of the American Society for Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

ODM was one of the main changes made to enhance recovery after surgery, Deltex said.

The programme increased the number of patients discharged on day two after surgery to 18.5% from 1.7%; generated a 25% reduction in the length of stay and reduced post-operative cardiac problems and wound infections by more than 80%.

As result, the hospital has made the enhanced recovery protocols, including ODM, the default for all colorectal surgeries and is looking at their use in urology and gynaecology.

Ewan Phillips, Deltex's chief executive, commented: "We are delighted that our dedicated trainer programme has helped deliver excellent results from such a high calibre and renowned US hospital as Brigham and Women's.

"This convergence of our US platform and market development programmes is important validation of our focused strategy to build our US business towards future national roll-out."

Deltex has signed up ten US hospitals so far as part of its trainer programme and aims to have coverage across the US by 2016.

Phillips told Proactive that its aim was to have thirty hospitals and within that five or six key users, such as B&W, to highlight the results than can be achieved.

Elsewhere, he added that Europe was good, but the UK extremely disappointing.

Shares rose 3% to 6.7p.
