Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) on Wednesday launched its Zoox robotaxi service in Las Vegas, offering free rides to passengers from a few locations.
The company said it has spent two years testing the vehicle in the city.
Amazon acquired Zoox five years ago for $1.3 billion.
The company plans to expand its Vegas ride services in the coming months and passengers will eventually have to pay, but Zoox said it’s waiting on regulatory approval first.
Zoox’s electric robotaxi doesn’t have a steering wheel or pedals, and its rectangular shape has been described as a toaster on wheels.
The robotaxi features two rows of seats that face each other, and its floor-to-ceiling windows are designed to enhance the passenger’s sightseeing experience.
The vehicle can operate for 16 hours on a single charge.
Zoox noted that it hopes to manufacture as many as 10,000 robotaxis annually as it expands into other markets.
The company plans to debut an early rider program in San Francisco before the end of the year.
