OpenAI forecasts $13bn in revenue as AI boom continues

OpenAI expects its annual revenue to triple this year to around $13 billion, up from $4 billion in 2024, according to chief financial officer Sarah Friar.

Speaking at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia conference, Friar said the business was growing at a “wild pace” and shaping a “whole new era of AI”.

The comments come after a turbulent few months for the company, including the release of ChatGPT-5 in August, which drew user criticism for being less conversational.

Chief executive Sam Altman later admitted the rollout had been mishandled.

Despite the hiccups, OpenAI is riding a wave of investor enthusiasm.

It is reportedly in talks to sell $6 billion worth of employee shares, which could value the company at $500 billion, a sharp jump from its $300 billion valuation in March.

Although the firm has close ties with Microsoft, there have been quiet tensions over control of AI products, with OpenAI pushing for more independence as it scales.
