BAE Systems PLC (LSE:BA.) will reportedly present new robotic warship designs at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London this week.
The company’s proposals include an “air warfare command ship” capable of carrying 128 missiles, laser weapons, drones and other defensive systems, according to media reports.
The vessel would use automation to reduce crewing requirements and act as a hub for up to six smaller ships.
These “deployed sensor effector platforms” would carry their own sensors and 32 missiles each. Designed to run with crews of between six and 12 sailors, the smaller vessels could also operate autonomously.
BAE said they could be built in two years, compared with five to six years for a frigate or destroyer.
“This is all about delivering additional mass for the fleet using an ultra-lean crewed model,” said Steve Hart, BAE’s head of maritime business development.
The concepts are being considered as potential options for the Royal Navy’s future Type 83 destroyer programme.
