Janus Electric CEO Lex Forsyth talked with Proactive about the company’s entry into the US market through a $1.25 million pilot agreement with Ability Trimodal Transportation Services. The deal will see Janus Electric supply two battery-swapping Class 8 prime movers and a Janus Charge and Change Station to Southern California, marking the company's first commercial deployment in North America.
Forsyth said, “This is going to be the first battery-swapping trucks in the US in the North American market that we know of today.” He explained the significance of bypassing tethered charging by enabling rapid four-minute battery swaps, which reduce the need for expansive charging infrastructure and mitigate grid strain, especially in areas like California with inconsistent electricity supply.
The port-focused pilot taps into a 26,000-strong drayage truck fleet that services the Long Beach and Los Angeles corridor. Forsyth highlighted that the Janus model is particularly well-suited to this high-frequency, short-haul logistics zone. The project also aligns with California’s strict emissions mandates, which now restrict access to the ports for non-zero-emission trucks.
Forsyth noted that Janus' Clean Energy drivetrain has received CARB certification, unlocking state funding opportunities. Fleet operators could access up to USD 90,000 per vehicle in conversion rebates. The pilot is expected to act as a key proof-of-concept, with Ability Trimodal already expressing intent to scale if the initial units perform as expected.
